A Mary Shortland was baptised at St Leonards, Shoreditch, London on 21/1/1753 and this could also be her. The name is not a native of the Long Compton area and it is highly likely that she moved from some distance away. Another possibility is that she was in service (perhaps at near-by Weston Park) and met her husband through attending church services in Long Compton.

She never married and is buried in a double grave with her sister Ellen Steel (formally Summers nee Cogbill) in the London Road cemetery just outside Shipston on the way to Long Compton. She was the youngest known child of her family. She used to live in a small cottage at the back of the Black Horse pub in Watery Lane, Shipston which still exists. She also worked at the Black Horse pub as a cleaner. Her great neice Dorothy May Taylor (nee Summers) who she adopted and raised as her own daughter was present at her death on 17th February 1928.
